steady/ˈstɛdɪ/ adj. 稳定的；镇定的

She gave her speech in a steady way.

她十分镇定地做完了演讲。

She is heartbroken, but her voice stays steady.

她心都碎了，但是声音还是保持着镇定。

 (as) steady as a rock 稳如磐石，其实就是形容非常稳定、十分可靠

*steady也可以做动词使用，steady oneself 使自己镇定下来。

stand by 做好准备；袖手旁观；继续支持；坚持

*stand by在不同情况下意思也不同，主要分为以下四类：

stand by 做好准备

A medical team was standing by throughout the marathon.

马拉松期间有医疗队全程待命。

stand by (and let something happen) 袖手旁观

A true friend will not stand by when you are in trouble.

真正的朋友不会在你有困难的时候袖手旁观。

stand by sb 继续支持 (尤指处于困境者)

Countless mothers and families are standing by her.

无数的母亲和家庭都在支持她

stand by sth 坚持 (原有的决定、承诺或声明)

The decision has been made and I have got to stand by it. 

 既然已经做了决定了，我就要坚持它。
