Nurse Jack Houston: A Prison Nurse’s Perspective on Healthcare

In this episode we hear a prison nurse’s perspective on healthcare from Jack Houston, better known as Nurse Jack. He joined Rob Oliver on the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast from his home in Texas. Nurse Jack has worked in psychiatry, surgery, and emergency medicine in community hospitals as well as prisons. He is a member of Generation X.

Here are 3 things that stood out as Nurse Jack shared a prison nurse’s perspective on healthcare:

· Mental illness is often associated with traumatic events in people’s lives. Many prisoners have experienced trauma before they enter prison. Almost all of them have experienced trauma in the prison system.
· Quality healthcare means that we can get the same level of care and the same quality of care no matter who we are, no matter where we live and no matter what we look like.
· In some prisons, the patient’s health care plan is better than the healthcare plan the staff receives.
