The acid that is supposed to stay in the stomach is going through a valve and up through the esophagus into the area of the voice box and the pharynx.

In many cases involving heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD the problem stems from not enough acid in the stomach. I usually tell people to try apple cider vinegar and betaine hydrochloride for these issues.
