In this podcast, I’ll tell you how to get rid of lower neck and shoulder pain using a very simple technique that requires no special equipment. The trapezius muscles are on the top of your shoulders. One of their functions is to allow you to shrug your shoulders up.
The principle I use is to loosen the opposing muscle; to stimulate it or stretch it to relax the painful one. If you have tight traps on top of your shoulders, as nearly everyone does, you'll be working on the lats, also known as the latisimus dorsal. All you need is a rolled-up towel and a chair. Place the towel under your armpit then lean on the towel on top of the chair back, with your arm hanging down the back. You’re going to stretch your lat muscles upward.
Do this for a couple of minutes first on one side, then the other. This is step one. You’re lengthening out the lat.
Sit up, and you’ll notice your shoulders and neck will be nice and loose. If you want to do this on someone else, you can put your hands underneath their armpits, lift up, and stretch out their lat muscles.
Step two: sit in the chair. Place your scapula on the top of the chair back. Get the scapula hooked over the chair back. Slouch down and stretch your whole shoulder upward. First one side, then the other. I know it looks weird, but it works.
Working on the opposing muscles sends signals to the traps to relax. No lower neck and shoulder pain!
