In this podcast, I’ll tell you why drinking too much water is harmful for your health. Dr. Tim Noakes is the authority in sports medicine, and this video is based on his excellent book called Waterlogged. We’ve been taught that we have to drink eight glasses of water every day, but this is in fact not true. And if you’re exercising, you’re supposed to drink much more than that!

But there is much more damage from overhydration, especially when you’re exercising, than from dehydration. There is almost no research stating that dehydration is a problem; however, there is plenty of research showing serious side effects of overhydration, also called water intoxication.

If you’re doing long-distance running, this is vital. When you drink excessive amounts of fluid, you can deplete your sodium levels. Your brain can swell. You put high stress on your heart. People have died from drinking too much water. This condition is called hyponatremia.

The symptoms of hyponatremia include worsening headache, rising body temperature (even when you stop exercising), and swelling of your hands and feet. Your body, though, has an amazing way of letting you know when you need water. Are you ready? It’s called thirst! When you’re thirsty, drink water. When you’re not thirsty, don’t drink water. Then you won’t put yourself at risk of drinking too much water.
